Always get the ‘A’ team
Some marketing agencies might use the top dogs to sell you then assign a puppy to your account. Not here. I personally manage all client engagements. You’ll never be passed on to an account executive. You always get the ‘A’ team: experience, expertise and enthusiasm.
Slaving away as a marketing professional in the corporate world, I faced constant pressure to conceive and execute marketing strategy and campaigns that delivered high quality leads, raised brand visibility, and met a whole bunch of communication objectives. You know the pressure.
Alas, I often lacked enough resources and talent to get the job done.
What an ongoing challenge to secure the services of talented, cost-effective marketing experts who could become an extension of a business! Real professionals I was looking for, the kind that could help create and broadcast clear messages to targeted audiences and deliver significant ROI on marketing.
Where were these people? I could hire the big agencies and end up with their “B” team. I could piecemeal resources together one freelancer at a time and give myself a logistics and management headache the size of . . . well, big.
No, neither of those would work. There had to be a better way!
And then I found the resource I needed: me.
So at the turn of the century (just this past one) I started a consulting firm to offer marketing services to businesses. It turned out to be a good idea, having passed the critical 5-year plateau some years back. Today, I work with a variety of B2B clients in technology, financial services, health care, publishing and education. And your industry . . . if I haven’t mentioned it.
Prior to opening my own marketing consulting firm, I held the usual array of management positions in corporate and product marketing. Turning back the clock further, I was a college instructor in creative writing and American literature. I have also worked in the newspaper and restaurant industry, and am a published fiction writer. Plus a lot of other jobs too numerous to name, such as harvesting corn on a farm (age 12) and ensuring quality control of dandruff shampoos (college summer job).
Education? Lots. A BA in Economics from the State University of New York at Albany, an MA in Creative Writing from the State University of New York at Buffalo and an MS in Technical Communication from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute — a great school that helped launch my professional career, but I still maintain that re-branding RPI to Rensselaer was a major blunder. How do you pronounce Rensselaer? How may ways can you spell it wrong? How much heritage from the name RPI are you throwing out? I guess the initials RPI aren’t good enough. I mean, look what a mess the acronym strategy made at MIT or IBM. All due respect to Shirley Jackson, president of RPI (yes RPI!), who has otherwise steered an amazing ship and for whom I’ve written several speeches, but not one on branding.
