Hiring Marketing Personnel

September 10th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve been working with a client who is trying to fill a position for a marketing associate. They’re a small company and need a self-motivated, independent professional who will basically be the marketing department.

What a mix of skills that requires. From developing marketing plans and justifying marketing investments, to writing copy and managing vendors, to making sure the lights work on the trade show booth.

I thought: this will be a hard person to find.

So the position was listed and the resumes flowed in and guess what? I wasn’t disappointed by the lack of qualified candidates but overwhelmed by the number of candidates who — at least on paper — possessed all the skills and experience the position required. Folks, there are a lot of marketers out there looking to switch jobs. And you have to wonder why.

Is everyone really so ambitious and driven that they’re looking for the bigger and better next career move? Some are, but I also think many people don’t fit in where they work. Some companies put too much weight on skills and experience and not enough on finding a person who fits the company culture. I’m no HR professional or expert in human behavior, but I believe it’s easier to measure tangibles like previous job experience, accomplishments and education than  to quantify the softer side of candidates: personality, motivation, desire, fortitude, fears, intelligence, confidence, etc.

In choosing from a pool of qualified candidates, the decision often comes down to personalities. Do you connect with this candidate or not? Will they fit in with your team? Skills can be taught. Emotional and cultural bonds cannot.
